In December of ’08, American Legion and VFW Posts 8, 313, 341, and 680 launched a trial “Books for Veterans Christmas Program” to distribute signed copies of Beaches to four V.A. Hospitals and Convalescent Centers in Lexington, Ky. The program proved so effective, it's time for another.
The reception from hospitalized and homeless Veterans was a terrific and often emotional success… far more than anticipated as confirmed by a letter from Ky's Dept. of Veterans Affairs:
“there are no amount of words to thank you…
the autographed books were an amazing gift to us all”
VA Hospital in Huntington, WV a Rousing Success
Reception of a two-day event held July 11 and 13, 2011 was so exceptional.staff volunteers who organized the pizza, pop, and book program were astounded by the enthusiasm with which WWII, Korean, Viet Nam, and Desert Storm outpatients lined up to receive personal signed copies. "We ran out [of donated supplies] within in an hour, but plan on doing another as a Christmas Special this coming December," said volunteer, Linda Markham.
